Decency and integrity. I have been talking about this for months. The reality is that so many politicians are so far removed from true public service. Many love the power, the money grab and a long term job on our tax dollars. I sometimes wonder what kind of bubble they live in to think they can continue to get away with unethical behavior that enhances their life at the expense of ours.
We see corruption everywhere and at times feel simply powerless. Today's news of insider trading and arrest was only a shock because we all presumed, when reading about it months ago, that nothing would happen. Thank goodness for the FBI and DOJ.
But, let's be honest, this is the tip of the iceberg. On the national scene, there is someone like Mitch McConnell who makes $174,000 in the U.S. Senate yet somehow has a net worth $22 million. Really, how does that happen? Come on! His state suffers with great poverty but his "service" seems to have only served him.
Here in New York, my opponent sits with a campaign account that might easily push towards $1,000,000 for a New York Senate seat that pays $79,000 a year. Think about that for a moment. Really, think about it. Do the research. Look at his campaign filings. Corporations, corporations and more corporations hand over their generous donations to him. Oh, and did you know he heads the corporations committee? If it is coming together for you now, you will understand why I am determined to unseat him. Western New Yorkers are left behind while his downstate "investors" (yes, they are investing in his vote), receive tax breaks that suck money from our communities. There is so much clarity in the question "what could we be doing with our tax dollars if we didn't give luxury developers the equivalent of corporate welfare? Should our schools in poverty stricken areas of District 61 have only one social worker so wealthy donors can have more money?”
The cycle of corporations putting money in the pockets of politicians and politicians returning the favor by giving gifts of tax breaks in the hundreds of millions and legislation that favors these donors, must end.
I am a good person yet am truly ticked off with the brazenness of politicians who think they are not accountable to their constituents and can hide behind "it's not illegal". Seriously, how low can the bar be set?
I have also said, if good people don't run for office, good people won't be in office. Come on everyone, let's end this cycle of corruption with our votes.
